Fear Is a Choice
by Michael Feeley
WHAT IS FEAR? The feeling of being afraid or scared of something. Worry. Anxiety. Dread. The real, robust emotion that something terrible, harmful will happen to you and other people.
There’s the fear of flying, heights, failure, success, claustrophobia, running out of money, snakes, spiders, water,
social situations, being alone…
The opposite of fear is trust, curiosity, the genuine desire to understand something, and to do it with courage.
I’m saying fear is a choice.
“F-E-A-R: has two meanings: Forget Everything And Run or Face Everything And Rise. The choice is yours.” — Zig Ziglar
One of my great fears was being ordinary – that my life would not matter, not have value or meaning. When I turned that fear around (made it optimistic), the mirror image was my fear of committing to being valuable and living with purpose.
That choice means standing by my life experience, skills, and knowledge. It means showing up and making a difference in this world and people’s lives.
Perhaps our greatest fear is trying and doing the work to matter because then people will count on us.
People will need us—no more hiding.
We each have the innate power to be fair, do good and change lives, but you have to want to do that and try.
