Encourage People
by Michael Feeley
LEARN TO WORK with and promote the skills a person has.
Connect with people. Study a person and talk to them – want to know what they are good at, what they like, and where they hope to do better. Then, you can encourage new growth and new attitudes.
Some people have so much ability and ambition to learn and to become more themselves. They want to make a difference
in the world.
How can you enable a person to turn what might feel are shortcomings into opportunities to develop and change –
to have the courage to move from average to remarkable?
Use empathy. Want to know others’ dreams, what they may fear, and where they are troubled by resistance – the inner heckling voice that says – “You can’t do that. You’re not good enough. Not smart enough.”
Sometimes all a person needs to thrive is self-confidence – belief from others that they can do things and do them well,
that their contributions matter, and that they will be successful at work and in life.
What happens when you encourage the best thing in another person?
“How can I help you be the person you most want to be?”
