Empathy in the Dark Moments

Empathy in the Dark Moments

by Michael Feeley July 27, 2026

Empathy doesn’t disappear in the dark moments. It’s not that fragile.

It’s a choice. Made again, and again, especially when things are hard.

Compassion for ourselves. Compassion for the people we love. And the harder one — compassion for strangers, who ask us for nothing and owe us nothing back.

Saying yes to that is where compassion proves itself real.

Here’s what I’ve noticed. When we choose it, the dark moments themselves change. They get lighter. Not because the situation shifts. Because we do.

The more we take the focus off ourselves, the more we truly care about someone else’s trouble, the more our own trouble loosens its grip.

This isn’t avoidance. It isn’t looking away from our own pain. It’s what happens when we stop making our pain the only thing in the room.

Compassion doesn’t erase the dark moments. It changes what they’re made of.
