Do You Want People to Count on You?
by Michael Feeley
WHAT DO YOU do when you count on someone, and they don’t come through?
First, I get disappointed and angry because all the person needs to do is communicate – call me and let me know you can’t show up or don’t want to do what I need, and please do not waste my time with a lame excuse.
Then I watch my trust disappear.
Then I roll up my sleeves and do the work myself, or the person hurries in to pick up the pieces, and I have to be critical.
I’d much rather thank you and praise you for your work and not have to lower my expectations.
I trust people. I like them to be leaders, innovators who believe in their work and commit to excellence.
I like to encourage a person to be their own boss, take responsibility, be creative, solve problems, come through,
be deeply rooted in the service of others, to be proud of yourself and the work you do.
Be remarkable.
Be indispensable.
Play at the top of your game being the very best there is!
If you want to coast and fake-away that is your choice but let people know upfront:
“Hi. Please don’t count on me. I am lazy.
I will not hold myself accountable for my work.
I might show up, and I might not.
I’m a hack. I’m not a professional.
I choose to be mediocre and just get by.
Quality work and integrity don’t matter to me.
Don’t expect much from me.
I will let you down.”
What is important enough to show up for and do your best work?
