DIY – Do It Yourself

by Michael Feeley
Do-It-Yourself (DIY) is precisely that. You figure out how to do something for yourself without hiring someone else, such as mowing your overgrown lawn, washing your dusty car, plumbing the leaky faucet, or refinishing your sad outside deck.
Do It Yourself – These three simple words can make you feel proud or wreak havoc.
You may already have the skills, or you may study ‘how to…’ and learn something new. You can use books, the Internet, or YouTube videos. It can be rewarding, but it can also be a challenge you do not want to get involved in, and it’s better to pay a professional for help.
There is also this twist to Do-It-Yourself where you feel – “If I want something done right, I should do it myself. Do it my way. I can’t trust anyone else.” That has some truth, along with superiority and judgment of others not being qualified and unable to do things the way you do, with you in control. This is a significant danger for relationships and managers at work.
Do-It-Yourself has options and consequences.
What’s your DIY success story or ‘never again ’?
