Disruption Can Be Good
by Michael Feeley
Sometimes, our lives get disrupted in various ways: emotionally, when we experience a loss or a significant change in our relationships; physically, when our health takes a turn or we have to adapt to a new environment; or financially when we face unexpected expenses or a job loss. In these moments, we need to regroup and change things, even while the fear of change has a tight hold on us.
Disruption can be good because, even with doubts, questions, fear, loss, and turmoil, it can be an opportunity, a gift for positive change in our lives. You can reevaluate your options and plan new action steps. A new purpose and knowledge help release the fear of change.
We want to change, and we like it. We often look and act to change specific things about ourselves and our relationship to other people and things. It’s normal. Call it improving, growing, modifying, shifting, amending, replacing, or doing things differently unless you relish fear, complacency, and feeling stuck. Whatever words connect with you and your purpose, use them. We’ll probably fail if we give ourselves orders without really wanting to change and without a solid and achievable plan.
Disruption has facts and structure. Fear has reasons and truth. Opportunity and positive change have logic, goals, and hope.
