Choices Shape Your Life

by Michael Feeley
Two choices have shaped my life and work.
Asking for what I want.
and
Creating opportunities to get it.
First, figure out what you want. It could be about what you want to do with your life, and that includes doing work that matters to you and others. What project, goal, or dream keeps pulling at you?
It’s not easy to discover what you want. It takes work and commitment. Take the time to be precise. When you know what you want to do, you can set up an achievable plan, and that means asking for it with respect and professionalism.
To discover what you want, write it down and then answer why. Once you get the answer, repeat it to refine and clarify it further. Keep asking why until you strike gold. The answer is in you. “I want this_________________. Why? Because_________? Why?
Don’t sit around waiting for things to happen magically. Be active. Go after it.
Want to work for a specific person or company? Build a can-do plan to make it happen.
Send a resume with a sincere and passionate cover letter explaining exactly why you’re interested in working for them.
Create multiple pathways to get that interview.
Don’t just have Plan A—have Plans B, C, and all the way down to X, Y, and Z.
Multiple plans and strategies work well along with solid hope and confidence.
This isn’t about being pushy or desperate. It’s about being intentional, respectful, and relentless in your pursuit of meaningful work and your happiness. You are in the driver’s seat. Don’t just stand in line waiting for a bus to be a passenger.
Every significant breakthrough and change in my career came from these two fundamental choices: asking for what I wanted and creating opportunities. They’ve opened doors and created a life I designed rather than settled for.
The opportunities you create today become the career you live tomorrow, and hopefully it’s your best life and work.
The two choices I made – asking and creating – enabled me to become a professional actor in New York City, reinvent myself as a headhunter finding people jobs, and open my own life and career coaching business. I have also recently written a book, The Next Act – A Complete Guide to Career Change, Professional Reinvention, and Finding Work That Matters.
What choices are you making?
What are you asking for?
What opportunities are you creating?
