Champions

Champions

WHAT DOES IT mean to be a Champion?

For me, it means showing up and always doing my best.

It’s not necessarily about winning or beating out someone else. On the contrary, you sincerely feel if another is good and wins, achieves, succeeds, I win too.

It’s community support, respect, and goodwill – having faith in people’s abilities and the conscious hope that others
be all they can be – Their Best.

It’s sportsmanship. Being ethical, honest, and supportive

Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar and Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy show this with heartfelt joy as they decided to share
the gold medal in the men’s high jump final at the Tokyo Olympics. Sharing victory, not cutting throats.

I also remember the 2012 Burlada Cross Country Race in Navarra, Spain, where Ivan Fernandez Anaya made the unselfish choice to help his opponent—Kenyan Abel Kiprop Muta, cross the finish line. Muta had been in the lead and became disoriented 10 meters from the finish line.

Ivan could have passed him and won the gold: “I did what I had to do. He was the rightful winner. He created a gap that I couldn’t have closed if he hadn’t made a mistake.”

When asked why he did that, Ivan said: “My dream is that one day we can have some sort of community life where we push ourselves and also others to win… What would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor of that medal?
What would my Mom think of that?”

Generous Champions. Champions of encouragement – possibilities – celebration – gratitude – change – peace – joy – love.

I think this also matters – Goodwill Has Power.
