Being in Flow
by Michael Feeley
BEING IN FLOW has facts to it, and once you know the facts, you can keep returning to the feeling and benefits of flow whenever you want.
Flow is a skill you can practice and achieve. It’s scientific and magical – truth with feelings – logic and emotions.
Flow is a state of mind where you’re immersed in an activity. You feel free, focused, fulfilled, and happy. You love what you’re doing, and usually, there’s no concern for time.
Flow happens in all the arts, sports, being in nature, at work, play, creating, teaching, learning+++
Your level of learning is high – practicing something to have more vital skills is part of the experience. Even when something is challenging, the work is inspiring, and the emotional and physical stretch in Flow is rewarding, even longed for.
Being in flow does not remove you from reality but creates greater awareness and presence in the world and connection to other people and things.
Flow creates feelings of peace and confidence and a lack of self-consciousness.
You’re most yourself when you are in the flow.
There’s intense gratitude and a genuine feeling of being at home with who you are and your core values. You’re whole – integrated – entire.
Here are some reasons why you feel and like the state of flow:
– You enjoy doing what you’re doing, and it makes for positive change.
– You’re using your skills and life experience.
– You have a purpose and set of goals.
– The activity matters to you and has value for others.
– You’re less aware of problems.
Positive psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi backs me up:
“The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one,
like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you’re using your skills to the utmost,”
