All Day Gratitude

All Day Gratitude

by Michael Feeley August 17, 2026

Some people spend a whole day scrolling. Some spend it gaming, napping, drifting from one small distraction to the next, hardly noticing the hours go. Nobody questions that. It’s normal. Expected, even.

But try telling someone you’re spending the whole day on gratitude — writing down everything you’re thankful for, one thing after another, for hours — and watch their face. It sounds strange. Excessive. Almost indulgent.

Gratitude is not indulgent. It is one of the few things that grows the more you spend on it.

Start small. Name the first thing that touched you today — the sheets, the light, the first sip of coffee. One word is enough. A simple word of gratitude can grow into an entire story.

“Coffee” becomes the friend who introduced you to it, becomes the kitchen you drank it in years ago, becomes the person no longer here to share it with you now. Follow any single word far enough, and it opens a door you didn’t know was there.

This morning it was fields of big yellow sunflowers that got me going at 6 am, the sun filtering in, and then a visit from a local cat who ate her breakfast and fell asleep in my lap while I meditated. Yours might be something in your own room right now.

I have so much to be grateful for. My garden. My husband. A voice still able to find its note when I hear a favorite song. A body that still spends hours weeding and pruning at 74 and creating new areas for garden plantings.

Whoever’s reading this, you have a list too, whether or not you’ve written it.

So here’s the challenge. Take the day. Not an hour. The day. Watch how the list stops being about things and starts being about people, then moments, then something harder to name. That’s the surprise. You will not run out of gratitude. Yours is boundless and endlessly particular and emotional and logical. It’s an all-day marathon of gratitude

You don’t need the whole day to begin. You need one word. Write it down. See where it takes you.
