A New Beginning – Your Afternoon of Living

A New Beginning – Your Afternoon of Living

by Michael Feeley October 16, 2026

There’s a puzzle scientists have been studying for years. They call it the Paradox of Ageing.

It observes that despite the physical, cognitive, and social challenges that are typically associated with getting older, maturing adults often report higher levels of emotional well-being, life satisfaction, and happiness than younger adults.

Our bodies slow down. Our knees complain, and we may need glasses to read the menu. And yet, study after study finds that many older adults are emotionally steadier, more content, and less troubled by the small stuff than they were when they were young.

How can that be?

Stanford psychologist Laura Carstensen has an answer I love. When we sense that our time is precious, we spend it differently. We stop chasing approval. We let go of people and battles that drain us. We lean toward what matters most: love, meaning, gratitude, and the people who make our days brighter.

Time doesn’t shrink our lives. It focuses them.

Carl Jung saw the same truth.

Jung compared a human life to the path of the sun. In the morning we rise. We climb toward noon, building our careers, our families, our reputations, our place in the world. It’s the season of proving ourselves.

Then comes the turn. The afternoon.

Most people see the afternoon as the beginning of the end. Jung saw it as the beginning of something new. He believed the second half of life has its own purpose. It isn’t a sad leftover of the morning. It’s a time to turn inward, to become deeper and whole, and to discover who we truly are beneath the titles and the striving.

Jung even argued that we wouldn’t live to 70 or 80 if those years had no meaning for our species.

He also warned us. In his words, “We cannot live the afternoon of life according to the program of life’s morning.”

What served us at 30 won’t serve us at 70. The hunger to win, to impress, to collect more, starts to feel small. Something deeper calls us now.

That’s the Paradox of Ageing in a single sentence. We lose some speed and gain a great deal of depth.

I feel it in my own life. I might be moving slower, but my mind is sharp and my creativity is flowing in mighty ways. I know my time is precious, so I live every day as if I have all the time in the world. I choose my people. I choose my work. I choose gratitude, every single day.

This is what Sagerism is all about. You are not declining. You are deepening.

The morning was beautiful. I wouldn’t trade it.

But the afternoon has a light all its own. It’s warmer and softer, and it shows the world in richer color. We see more clearly now because we’ve seen so much and gratitude is strength and also an empowering emotion to practice and live with.

Here’s my question for you:

How are you living, by the morning’s rules? Or are you ready to step into the golden light of your afternoon?
