3 Books Help with Aging and Work

3 Books Help with Aging and Work

by Michael Feeley August 10, 2025

Here are three books I recommend as people think about work and aging. They help change minds about aging by showing how to leverage skills and experience professionally, as well as how to take action on what matters most, as we each mature and plan our future lives and work.

These books don’t just inspire – they provide frameworks for navigating the real concerns that come with aging and reinvention.

  • Whether you’re worried about having enough energy for new challenges
  • Concerned about staying relevant in a rapidly changing world
  • Feeling like you’ve already lost too much time

These authors address the practical and emotional hurdles that keep people stuck. They acknowledge that change at any age requires courage, but they also prove that it’s never too late to make a meaningful impact – and that your experience is actually your greatest advantage in doing so.

1. Breaking the Age Code by Becca Levy – Backed by rigorous research, Levy shows how our beliefs about aging literally affect our health, longevity, and cognitive function. It changes the entire framework for how people think about getting older, as well as extending their life with a shift in positive mindset on aging.

2. Wisdom at Work by Chip Conley celebrates the unique value that maturity and experience bring, particularly relevant in a youth-obsessed culture. Conley presents the fact that older workers possess wisdom, emotional intelligence, and perspective that complement younger colleagues’ energy and tech-savviness – reframing aging as an asset rather than a liability.

3. The War of Art by Steven Pressfield – While not specifically about aging, it tackles the crucial subject of resistance that often intensifies with age as people become more aware of unfulfilled dreams and limited time. It’s a powerful eye-opener for anyone who struggles with creative resistance (your inner negative critic knocking you down) as they mature and think about their value and expertise going forward, because they are not done yet.

And a personal encore suggestion: The Next Act – A Complete Guide to Career Change, Professional Reinvention, and Finding Work that Matters by Michael Feeley.

Which of these connects most with where you are right now?

What’s the biggest challenge you’re facing as you think about aging and your next act and encore?
