Your Guru
by Michael Feeley
WE ALL HAVE a Guru in our lives (probably more than one) – an expert, authority, master, professional or leader.
The literal translation is a “dispeller of darkness.” Darkness means the unknown and ignorance (in the best sense).
A guru brings you into the light.
It’s a respectful and loving way of seeing a teacher, mentor, and coach – ‘…who brings you into the light.’
– Soprano Beverly Sills studied singing with Estelle Liebling for over 30 years.
– Butch Harmon was the long-time coach of golfer Tiger Woods.
– Frank Carol has coached international skating champions for years.
– Natalie Goldberg relentlessly teaches writers and authors.
– Hal Prince directed some of the greatest and most loved Broadway Musicals.
Some people dislike the respect others have for one person who heavily influenced their lives and their effect on people and the world, so they try to lessen their value by contemptuously saying they’re a follower or believer of a guru.
All I can say is Yes! This person is my guru. What they taught me works for me, and instead of tearing down someone and their knowledge, why not study it and see if what they know is valid and useful?
Give credit where credit is due and without limit.
Having gratitude, humility, and pride in learning from someone is crucial to living your best life and doing your best work with happiness and prosperity.
Jealousy, envy, and resentment are awful choices, but sometimes, people think it’s easier and more powerful than choosing respect, honest praise, loyalty, and devotion.
