Your Flywheel
by Michael Feeley
A flywheel is a heavy wheel. It takes real effort to get it turning. The first pushes feel like nothing is happening. But keep pushing, and the wheel begins to move, and once it moves, its own weight helps carry it. Every push adds to the one before.
Business people use this word for how a company grows: one good thing feeds the next.
But a flywheel is not only for business. You have one. You probably have several.
Any practice where today’s effort makes tomorrow’s easier is a flywheel. Writing and publishing every day. Walking every morning. Teaching yoga. Practicing your craft. Building your business one conversation at a time. Being kind, because kindness and empathy for others build trust, trust builds relationships, and relationships make kindness easier to give.
The trouble is that most of us never name our flywheel. We call it routine, or discipline, or just what we do. So we don’t see what we are building.
Please look at your life today and ask:
What am I pushing on every day?
Is it a wheel I want spinning?
Which wheel is waiting for me?
Recognizing your flywheel changes how you treat it. A small daily push stops feeling small. Today’s work adds to everything you have already done.
Maybe one of your wheels has gone quiet. A language you once spoke. An instrument you used to play. You feel rusty. But rusty doesn’t mean it is gone. The skill is still in you, and a wheel you have turned before comes back to speed faster than you expect. It only asks that you work at it freshly. Practice steadily.
Or maybe you are pushing the wrong wheel. That happens. You are allowed to stop and start a new flywheel. You already know how to push.
