Woke is an essential, empowering new word for me.

It means being aware of and actively advocating for important facts and issues of race and social justice, knowing what’s happening in the community, and being awake to sensitive cultural and political issues, such as racism and inequality.

The meaning of woke has been used since the 1930s and earlier.

These days, we need to be woken and advocate for positive, respectful, life-enhancing change. Not silence, not looking away, not settling, not accepting things as they are. We need to take responsibility and respond with active, fierce, and empathetic awareness.
