What’s a Friend?

What’s a Friend?

by Michael Feeley July 20, 2026

It’s different from being friendly, different from having an acquaintance. It’s deeper.

For each of us, the meaning is specific. And the why matters. Why do we call someone a friend?

For me, it’s trust. Trusting someone to talk to, to share with, to ask for help. Respecting their opinion enough to really listen. You count on them, and you give back — you return the favor of hoping to be just as good a friend in kind.

When conflict comes, you talk it out, because the relationship matters more than being right. No matter how much hurt or anger or misunderstanding sits between you, you talk it out and find a way through — even when the way through means you’re no longer friends.

So I’ll ask you what I ask myself: if you have a friend, why do you call them that? Not what they do for you. Why you trust them with the word
