We’re All Life Guards
by Michael Feeley
IT’S CRUCIAL WORK to be a life guard and care for people’s lives. It calls to the most vital thing in you – your ability to help and keep another human being from drowning.
Lifeguards are expert swimmers hired to protect people – having patience and skills in water safety, rescue techniques, teaching swimming, and extreme, watchful awareness of what is going on around them.
I’m a lifeguard in my coaching work, carefully helping someone change their life and fulfill dreams.
There’s symbolism here – people diving into their questions, treading water, splashing around in the unknown seas of self and life – surface and depth – turbulence and calm – sink or float – is always present.
I believe we each have a gigantic desire to help other people live the best lives they can, and there should be no hesitation in trying to save a drowning person who might feel overwhelmed by life, ready to quit struggling because they’re tired or stressed.
How are you a lifeguard in everyday life and the work you do?
Thanks – Michael
