Vintage Job Shopping
by Michael Feeley
You are not done.
Not done working. Not done contributing. Not done giving back everything you have spent a lifetime earning — knowledge, expertise, hard-won judgment, the life experience that no degree program can teach and no shortcut can buy.
You are Vintage. A Sager. And that is exactly what the world needs more of.
Yes, ageism exists. It’s ugly, and one of the last unacceptable prejudices still hiding in plain sight. You may walk into a room and feel the number above your head flashing like a neon sign. You may be passed over. Underestimated. Dismissed.
Do not let it stop you!
Everything you have been doing — the reading, thinking, practicing, deepening — has been preparing you for your next work opportunity. Living as a Vintage person is not separate from the job search. It is the preparation—the mindset shift.
Age does not flatline you. It ripens and concentrates your value.
The marketplace is waking up to this. More companies are actively seeking Sagers — people who bring skills and wisdom, steadiness, perspective. It’s Vintage Potential.
Here’s what I recommend:
– Every single day — do one deliberate thing to find the work you want.
– Send a résumé.
– Make a phone call. Ask real questions about a company or a job listing.
– Find a person you want to work for and connect with them. Talk. Listen. Express yourself.
One vital, small step. Daily. That step becomes 7 days. A week becomes a month. And eventually, by accumulated intention — you will find what you want. Or you will discover what you do not want, which is equally valuable. That is the Vintage will and desire doing its finest work.
If a rejection letter arrives (and it may), do not file it. Flip the no into an action yes.
Write them back:
“Thank you for your response. I want you to know I am still the best person for this job. So here is my proposal. Put me with the person you hired to work together for one week, and I’ll show you what I bring to the room. Then decide.”
Be bold. Ask for what you want.
Most people will never write that letter. Most will accept the no and move on. But you are not most people. You are a Vintage Warrior. You have earned the audacity to create the opportunity when the door closes in your face.
Some may say no. A few will say yes. The one yes born because you refused to vanish — will be exactly the right room for your Vintageness.
If you need both the practical roadmap and the deeper permission to begin, my book The Next Act: A Complete Guide to Career Change, Professional Reinvention, and Finding Work That Matters was written for exactly where you are standing.
You are not declining. You are deepening – Sagerism.
And somewhere, someone is hiring for exactly that.
