Vengance and Retribution

by Michael Feeley
Vengeance and retribution are two words that frequently appear in newspapers, magazines, blogs, podcasts, and conversations more these days than I ever remember.
Vengeance is the act or choice to have revenge, to control, punish, or inflict pain in response to an injury or wrongdoing.
Retribution seeks justice and is motivated by a desire to restore order. To help, not harm,
I think of Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, where Hamlet chooses to avenge his father’s murder. He states: “O Vengeance!”
There is power in both vengeance and retribution. What is the difference?
It’s something to sort out. To be clear on purpose.
