Values
by Michael Feeley
THE PRINCIPES WE live by are called values. They are important standards and choices for our lives. Values guide us. They live in our center, minds, and hearts. Values are our attitude to the world.
Values can be good or bad.
Values can change.
We judge ourselves on values.
Where do your values come from? Your culture – family and extended family – education – work – personal life experiences.
There are two kinds of values – fear-based and conscious-based.
Fear-based values usually don’t make us take action because we want to avoid something.
Conscious-based values help us to take action steps. They’re things we want to do, like, and are passionate about.
Awareness of these two ideas is helpful because your value choices enable you to be true or false to yourself and stand for your human ability to make moral judgments about world, leaders, nations, people, and yourself.
Some questions to consider:
> Why do your values matter to you?
> How are your values working for you?
> When might values show up for you?
> Where might you compromise your values?
> When life is good, what values are present and honored?
> When life challenges you, what values might be in question?
Here’s a suggestion:
Please write down 1, 2, or 3 values you treasure and live by.
The goal is to make them tangible and to help you discover and be grounded in what matters to you, what defines your integrity, your thoughts, emotions, beliefs, attitudes, choices, and change.
Your values make your life. Value your values
