Two Teachers – Success and Difficulty

Two Teachers – Success and Difficulty

by Michael Feeley August 24, 2026

Some things click right away. Others take practice. Real practice, over real time.

Think about learning an instrument, a sport, a new language, how to drive, how to cook. Nothing arrives all at once. You work at it, you repeat it, you get it wrong, you get it a little less wrong, and eventually, if you keep showing up, it clicks.

Some say it can take thousands and thousands of hours to reach mastery. The number matters less than what it implies: commitment—a daily, ongoing decision to keep going.

And here’s the part people don’t talk about enough: the commitment doesn’t feel the same every day. Some days you work with pleasure. The thing moves. You’re a star. You soar.

Other days it’s frustration. Nothing moves. Everything you attempt falls apart, and quitting starts to sound reasonable.

Here’s the shift: the hard days aren’t a detour from becoming accomplished; they’re the route. Anyone can do the parts that come easy. What separates the person who gets good from the person who is average or gives up is a willingness to go straight at the parts that resist them. Difficulty isn’t what’s in the way. It is the way. Accept that, and the discouragement changes shape. It’s no longer a sign you’re failing; it’s a sign you’ve reached the part worth doing. And in many ways there is joy and excitement in the hard work.

Success shows you what works. Difficulty shows you what you’re actually made of. You need both. Both work together.
