Two Attitudes At Work

by Michael Feeley
I’ve been observing and thinking about the different attitudes between people who thrive and people who just get by.
I work with a person who rarely waits to be told what to do. They are proactive. They look around to see what is happening, what needs to be done, and what can be done. They are not worried about making mistakes. They create solutions to keep things running smoothly, and if something breaks down, they have alternatives and trusted people to help them get things functioning again. They see opportunities and take action, doing what needs to be done, and usually, they go above and beyond. They like to learn and grow. They are open to change.
On the other hand, there are plenty of people who want to be told what to do. They sometimes ask – “What do you want me to do?” but often do not. They wait to be told. Not exerting a great deal of effort. Maybe they are at work on time, but they’re definitely out the door by five. A favorite phrase is this – “That’s not my job.”
Which person would you count on and want to work with?
And here’s the tough question – Which person are you?
And more importantly – Which person do you want to be?
