Trust and Trusting the World
by Michael Feeley
The world is composed of dualities. Good and evil – happiness and misery – love and hate – respect and contempt. Those identical opposites are in us. We can be generous, selfish, kind, ruthless, helpful, and harmful—these facts show how profoundly we are connected to the world, are like the world and not so different, which can make for trust.
So, when we talk about trusting the world, we focus on the optimistic emotion and belief that the world is on our side—not looking to harm or thwart us – but rather planning our happiness and success.
Even when feeling great physical and emotional pain, we can still choose to believe the forces of the world will help us come through the challenge, and they usually do. Trust is choosing to see a problem as an opportunity to learn from and grow.
People often say the world needs to change, and I see it differently. The world is fine the way it is; however, people need to change how they see and use the world.
Growing up was painful, and I cursed the world for giving me an alcoholic father, parents with an unhappy marriage, childhood illness, lack of money, and bullying, so I saw the world as an unkind, messy place to be in. Through different studies and personal growth work, I learned I had an attitude toward the world and that it was primarily inaccurate, an untrue way of seeing people, money, learning, sex, family, freedom+++, and that I could change how I saw the world.
Trust is a powerful and kind emotion – the belief that someone or something (such as the world) is reliable and that good things will happen. There’s security and confidence in trust, the choice to count on people and things to come through, which means you count on the truth and goodwill of the world.
Trust trust. Trust yourself and trust the world.
