Trust
by Michael Feeley
Trust is a feeling. It’s also a choice, a commitment you make and keep living, day after day.
Trusting feels good. It opens you. It lets you rest in confidence with another person.
When trust breaks, you have two options. You can walk away, or you can rebuild.
That decision is yours. Maybe the person told the truth about what they did. Maybe they apologized without excuses. Maybe you sense they’ve earned another chance.
An apology opens the door. Consistent action, over time, is what walks back through it.
Rebuilt trust isn’t the same as the original. It’s often wiser. It knows what it’s risking, and it chooses anyway.
I’m a trusting person. But when broken trust is built on lies and deception, I walk away. Then I turn and look at myself. What did I miss? What did I want to believe?
Because when trust breaks, something else cracks too: our trust in our own judgment. That’s the trust that matters most to rebuild, whether you stay or go.
Trust was never fixed. It was always flexible, always yours to give, to withhold, and to give again.
You’re not naive for renewing it. You’re not cold for leaving.
You’re choosing.
