The System of Ageing

by Michael Feeley
We’re all travelers in time’s most democratic system—aging touches everyone, yet each journey unfolds uniquely. From the first day of kindergarten to the last day before retirement, our lives are gently structured by milestones that both guide and define us.
Shakespeare understood this rhythm when he wrote of life’s “Seven Ages of Man.” His poetry reminds us that each phase carries its own gifts: the wonder of childhood, the passion of youth, the wisdom of maturity, the reflection of our later years. We’re always in some act of our personal play.
The beauty lies in how aging creates both boundaries and possibilities. Yes, you must wait to drive, to vote, to make certain choices. But these aren’t merely restrictions—they’re invitations to inhabit each season fully.
The teenager discovers independence. The young adult builds foundations. The midlife voyager reassesses and reinvents. The elder cultivates wisdom and legacy.
Where are you in your own story today?
Perhaps you’re in the “building” act, constructing a career and family. Maybe you’re in an “encore” phase, pursuing dreams deferred or discovering entirely new ones. The system of aging doesn’t trap us—it provides structure within which we create meaning.
Each stage holds space for growth, connection, and transformation.
The question isn’t whether we’re aging—we all are—but how we’ll embrace the particular wisdom, challenges, and opportunities of this stage, right now, with intention and hope. Courage and curiosity in our unique way.
What will you make of your current act and upcoming encores?
