The Skill You Never Want to Lose
by Michael Feeley
Recently I’ve written about skills we gain, skills we lose, and skills we hand off. Today I want to name the one I will never let go.
For me, it is caring about other people. Caring means wanting to understand people: their questions, their worries, and how they see the world. It goes far beyond passing curiosity or polite interest. It is not pretending to dig deep while really waiting for your turn to talk. It is genuinely wanting to reach inside someone’s head and heart, and hoping you can help them live better.
That is why I love coaching so much. Every session asks me to care fully, to listen past the words, and to stay with someone until we both see more clearly.
Caring is a choice before it is a skill. Each day, in each conversation, we decide whether to lean in or to stay cold and aloof. I choose to care. And because caring is also a skill, it needs tending. We have to keep practicing it. We have to respect it. We cannot let it lapse or grow careless with it, because careless is exactly what we become when we stop caring.
The gift we love most deserves our most faithful attention.
So I ask you:
What is the skill you never want to lose? The ability you love using? Name it. Then protect it. Practice it today, on purpose, so it’s still yours tomorrow.
