The News Lumps Things Together

by Michael Feeley
I received a news email and was startled and shocked by how two headlines were put next to each other.
“Suspected Minnesota gunman captured, The surprising health benefits of good posture…”
The juxtaposition is jarring – a violent crime with a lifestyle tip? It’s an editorial mistake and a disconnect between content delivery and the value of human lives. What message does this editorial choice send?
What do you think?
Is it wise to lump headlines together?
What kind of choice was made to bundle news together for everyone – devastating news with a mundane health point?
What does it say about the convenience of offering news for everyone over compassion?
The senseless, calculated murders in Minnesota are horrible! The world is grieving. And then, to casually follow it with ‘good posture’ is careless, thoughtless, unnecessary, and unkind.
People in the marketing news industry should lead with empathy, not metrics, and think about how their words will affect people.
It seems human suffering has become just another content category that is packaged for consumption. We must speak up and not just accept something fundamentally wrong.
News should inform with dignity and respect, not dehumanize.
