The Meaning of Jerk
by Michael Feeley
Jerk is not a word I like to use about another person. I hear it used more and more.
I researched it to understand its meaning.
I learned this: A jerk is an annoyingly stupid or foolish person. They are selfish, cruel, rude, and small-minded. You might assume someone is a jerk because they are self-absorbed and cannot achieve their goals.
The term first appeared in the USA in the 1930s.
It is an insult. It is not vulgar and not a swear word.
It’s directly related to a bully, troll, or tyrant who likes to have power and harm other people and things in person and on social media.
I have reconsidered using the word “jerk” because it defines and describes some of my feelings and observations about other people in the world who have all kinds of jobs and live their lives in a way that is jerky, mean, and ruthless.
The desire to understand, learn, be accurate, and know the facts and truth is essential to how we live and treat others.
