The Exception
by Michael Feeley
Not every person deserves the same welcome. Not every situation calls for the same response. There are exceptions — and they matter.
We open our homes to guests but not to those who insult and harm us.
Teachers hold space for every student, but not for the bully who destroys it.
Citizens build nations together, but not with tyrants who betray them.
This is not hypocrisy. This is discernment, and discernment runs deep.
It means knowing right from wrong. Also knowing what is essential from what is secondary. What is permanent from what is passing. What is worth protecting from what can be released. Discernment is proportion. It is wisdom with a compass.
But here is where exceptions end.
Your integrity. Your core values. The beliefs and principles that define who you are — these should not be altered, abbreviated, or hemmed to a different length for someone else’s comfort. They should not be edited for convenience, trimmed for approval, softened with the hope that no one will notice — or if they do, that they will merely look away.
You do get to decide who you are in every room. You choose your actions. You read the situation. You respond as you see fit.
But you have to live with yourself.
Every choice has your name on it. Every exception you make or refuse to make is a statement about who you are.
Own it. No exceptions.
