The Eric Hoffer Book Award – The Next Act by michael feeley
by Michael Feeley
The Next Act: A Complete Guide to Career Change, Professional Reinvention, and Finding Work That Matters – was published on April 8, 2025. One year later, it is still earning honors.
I am proud to announce that The Next Act has been named a Finalist in the Eric Hoffer Book Award — one of the largest international book awards for small, academic, and independent presses. Fewer than 10% of nominated books reach the Finalist distinction. This is the book’s third award tribute.
That this recognition arrives a full year after publication means something to me. A book that continues to be discovered, read, and honored long after its launch has done what it was always meant to do: find the reader who needs it, in the moment they are ready.
The Eric Hoffer Book Award honors the memory of Eric Hoffer — the great American philosopher who proved that original, powerful thought can emerge from any life, at any stage. The award highlights salient writing and the independent spirit of small publishers, championing freethinking writers and independent books of exceptional merit.
The Next Act was written for a specific and vital community: men and women between the ages of 50 and 80+ who have spent their working lives developing genuine skill, hard-won expertise, and life experience that no algorithm can replicate. It was written to help them name what they carry, value what they know, and step boldly into their next chapter.
An award like this is never a solitary achievement. My profound gratitude goes to my editor Ann Sheybani — whose vision, precision, and belief in this book made it what it became — and to the entire team at Summit Press Publishers for bringing it into the world with such care and craft.
