The Accurate Critic
by Michael Feeley
Not all criticism is cruel.
When someone holds you fully in mind and heart — your potential, your work, your capacity to grow — and still tells you the hard truth, that is not an attack. That is care.
The accurate critic says what is working. Says what is not. Says what could be stronger. They are not tearing you down. They are building you up with honest hands.
This kind of criticism comes from respect. It arrives with the hope for change, the belief in your ability to do better. No matter how direct, how uncomfortable, how blunt — if it is accurate and it is intended to help, it is compassionate.
Seek those people. Trust them. Listen hard.
The critic who tells you the truth because they believe in you is one of the great gifts of a life well lived.
Unsolicited criticism is another matter entirely. Smile. Walk on.
