Stay or Go
by Michael Feeley
One essential question to answer in life and career coaching is this – What do I want?
Yes. It is a big question, but it can be very basic. You can lead and explore with your immediate thoughts and wishes. Let’s be specific about work. What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think – What do I want in my job and career?
If you presently have a job, the question could be, should I stay or go? Which is directly related to what you want. Your answer depends on how happy you are with your work, and this includes several details.
How respected do you feel at work?
How sincerely expressed at work are you? This means that you are doing work that motivates you and creates a change you are passionate about.
How much are you growing and making an impact, a difference in the well-being of others?
What’s missing that you want to add, and what do you want to remove or alter?
If you decide you want to go and look for different work, make yourself a master list of questions and things that are important to you:
What will I accept and not accept?
What is the yes and no for my next position?
What do I have to have, and what might be a deal-breaker?
What salary do I need?
What are the health and vacation benefits?
Where do I want to live, and what is the cost of living there?
What does your ideal role look like – the position, title, and responsibilities?
What is the growth potential?
Who will I be working with?
What is the culture of the company?
What will my quality of life be in this job?
Will I be living in or out of integrity if I do this work?
Now that you’ve made this master list, prioritize and rank what comes first, second, third, and so on in order of importance. This will also connect to your values and inspire you, lifting you up to new levels of energy and commitment. Honoring your worth means building self-esteem, dignity, and respect.
If you decide to stay where you are, you can use these questions to reassess your present job and make changes, reset and renew yourself, or you can accept what you have and keep working as you are.
Considering these questions and conducting thorough research on companies, people, and career opportunities is exciting. Change is possible. You have many hopeful and gratifying choices and possibilities.
