Shenanigans: The Dark Side of Mischief
by Michael Feeley
The word sounds playful, almost whimsical. But shenanigans aren’t innocent fun—they’re deception wearing a friendly mask.
At their core, shenanigans involve manipulation and trickery. We see them everywhere: in political maneuvering where language obscures truth, in financial schemes that hide real intent, in relationships where control masquerades as care.
Before pointing outward, look inward. Where might you be engaging in your own shenanigans? Those small deceptions you tell yourself? The ways you manipulate situations to avoid difficult truths? The control disguised as helping?
The world stage offers master classes in shenanigans—leaders who deploy half-truths, policies designed to confuse rather than clarify, systems built on keeping people off-balance. Study them not to emulate, but to recognize.
Integrity means refusing shenanigans in all forms. It means being one way—transparent, honest, direct. When you eliminate your own shenanigans, you develop the clarity to spot them elsewhere.
That’s genuine power and goodwill.
