Roll with the Punches
by Michael Feeley
Often, I’m caught by phrases and idioms that people use. I’m curious about their meaning and history, so I look them up.
“Roll with the punches” is my latest wondering.
It comes from the sport of boxing. It’s an instruction to step back or to one side as a boxer is being hit or punched so the boxer receives less of the full force of the attack. It has strategy, purpose, skill, art, and technique.
It sounds tough with punches and rolling, but it’s positive because it’s about adapting, dealing with difficulties, and not being discouraged by challenges in life.
Rolling with the punches gives you options where you’re open to working through things for yourself, your work, and others.
