Reveal Yourself
by Michael Feeley
Some people wear a pleasant costume over something else entirely. Amiable. Efficient. A voice pitched high and small — until one day it cracks, and what comes out is deep and sharp and unarranged. That’s not who they became. That’s who they were the whole time, finally audible.
Other people never bother with the costume at all. Rude. Demanding. Vengeful. Superior. No performance, no management of your perception — just exactly who they are, out loud, every day. It’s not likable. But it’s honest in its own blunt way.
And then there are the rare ones who are simply, consistently the real thing. Generous. Kind. Wise. Nothing performed, nothing withheld. Their tone doesn’t shift with the room. Their presence is the same at your kitchen table as it is anywhere else. You feel it immediately — something in you relaxes, because there’s nothing to decode. These are the people you want to be near. And the ones worth learning from.
What connects all three is this: revealed is revealed. Whether what shows up is generosity or roughness, at least you know exactly who you’re dealing with. You’re not being managed. You’re not waiting for a mask to slip so you can finally see straight.
Being revealed doesn’t mean being good. It means being true. Aim higher than true. Aim for true and kind.
