Praise or Flattery?
by Michael Feeley
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE between praise and flattery?
Praise is meaningful and based on truth. Flattery is insincere.
Flattery is excessive, effusive, used to get approval; playing on a person’s vanity because you have an ulterior motive –
to get your way with compliments.
Honest praise comes from respect. There’s a real desire to encourage the deepest and best thing in a person.
You’re for their strength. The recognition is genuine and deserved.
There are gratitude and admiration in praising someone for who they are and the work they do.
What is the purpose of honest praise and the pursuit of flattery?
You know the difference when it happens.
Zig Ziglar: “If you’re sincere, praise is effective. If you’re insincere, it’s manipulative.”
