Plan to Recover from Rejection
by Michael Feeley
Whenever you share your work, call a prospective client, sell an idea, product, or service, make a presentation, launch a project, interview for a job, or go on a date, you open yourself up to hope and fear.
You hope for success and acceptance – “It happened. It worked.” But there’s also the fear of rejection.
As you lead with your plans for success, you should also plan for failure. What if it doesn’t work? What if they don’t like you? How will you recover from rejection?
You have two options – allow yourself to go down in flames and suffer, or you can regroup and see where you can do better and try again. Alter, improve your work, and learn from the experience.
It’s not an easy choice, and it seems wild and a waste of time to focus on dealing with the possibility of failing. It’s a new level of awareness to focus on the defeat or loss of something to help you not get thrown, recover more quickly with less pain, and bounce back from a kick in the teeth.
Yes. You feel the painful disappointment, and you should. It’s part of life and how we are built. Don’t pretend or deny the hurt, but at the same time, incorporate positivity, optimism, gratitude, and resilience—opposite choices on behalf of your welfare.
