Plan and Spontaneity
by Michael Feeley
PLAN AND SPONTANEITY are always working together in some way.
These opposites are always in art and life in some relationship.
You plan a business talk or dinner for friends, and in each, there is organization and some adlibbing.
In a Zoom meeting, you might be asked to speak on the spot, unplanned, but you’re still using the planned platform,
your experience, knowledge, practice, creativity, and skills. You spontaneously make it work.
You need to trust yourself and see – you’re always prepared and also able to wing it.
How often have the best times of your life come from being entirely spontaneous – randomly trying new things,
taking risks?
You can’t be spontaneous all the time, and planning, while helpful, can hold you back, keep you stuck from fun and adventure.
Sometimes you have to stop planning and just act because life is too short to wait for the perfect plan.
What about planning spontaneity?
One of my favorite playwrights, Oscar Wilde, says: “Spontaneity is a meticulously prepared art.”
