People Pleasing or People Serving
by Michael Feeley
There’s a difference between sincerely serving people and being a people pleaser.
A people pleaser wants others to like them and approve of their actions.
They’re overly concerned with their welfare above that of others. They’re self-serving first and not people serving.
Their drive to please sacrifices their own wants, and that can create resentment if the people pleaser does not receive the recognition and praise they imagine they deserve.
The fear you might let others down can mess you up. People-pleasers often lose track of who they truly are. They become chameleons, changing themselves to make other people happy.
Being of service to people is a more profound value because your purpose is to be fair to something larger than just your ‘self.’ You hope your customer care, the services, and the products you offer to people will make their lives better. People pleasing is a strength when it comes from wanting to help people.
When you value serving people, you’re concerned about how people are affected by your work.
You choose to build trust and a caring business relationship you intend to maintain and grow for a long time.
Authentic people service makes a positive difference in someone’s life and the world. You know you’re spreading kindness and expressing your true self.
Here are some thoughts on how to change being a people pleaser:
– Recognize your choices – why are you doing what you are doing?
– Set a healthy balance and boundaries between self and work.
– Prioritize your needs as well as the needs of others.
– Learn to say yes and no and understand your purpose in wanting to please.
– Be true to yourself and not just work to fit in for approval.
– Learn how to validate yourself and not depend on other people’s validation.
– Be aware that you shouldn’t and can’t please everyone.
