Out of Sight. Out of Mind? Not Necessarily.
by Michael Feeley
We know the old saying: “Out of sight, out of mind.” It suggests that distance creates disconnection, that physical absence equals emotional absence.
It’s a choice we each make. between respect and disrespect. Caring or not.
You can be away from home, traveling for work, or separated by miles—yet still carry people and commitments in your thoughts. That’s presence through intention. Or you can dismiss them entirely, letting distance become an excuse for indifference. That’s absence through neglect.
The difference reveals character.
“Out of sight, in mind” means you honor what matters even when it’s not immediately visible. You check in. You make things happen. You remember. You follow through. You show up mentally and emotionally, even when you can’t be there physically.
It’s the colleague who thinks about their team while on vacation.
The leader who delegates to get things done, trusting others while staying engaged.
The parent who remains connected despite distance.
The friend who remembers what you told them last month.
The committed person who, even while physically challenged, still comes through.
This isn’t about perfection—it’s about respect. When something or someone matters, they don’t vanish from your consciousness just because they’ve left your field of vision.
What we hold in mind when it’s out of sight? That’s respect. What we forget? That’s disrespect.
