Not As Far As You Can Throw Him
by Michael Feeley
Someone asked me to recommend a person for their project. “But,” they added, “several people say they don’t trust him…” not as far as they can throw him.”
I said, “Why ask me? You have your answer.”
When someone shows you who they are — when multiple people warn you someone is extremely deceptive, dishonest, controlling, hidden — you don’t need a second opinion. You need to listen.
“I don’t trust him as far as I can throw him” means exactly what it sounds like:
Zero Trust. None. The person doesn’t tell the truth. They operate in shadows. You can’t and shouldn’t rely on them.
So why do we do this? Why do we seek validation when we already have the answer?
Because we want permission to ignore what we know. We want someone to say, “Oh, they’re fine with me,” so we can proceed despite the red flags.
Stop it!
Trust is everything in business, in relationships, in life. When it’s not there, nothing else matters. No talent, no charm, no convenience is worth working with someone you can’t trust.
