Need – Want
by Michael Feeley
WE NEED AND WANT things. Need is a little different from wanting. You may want things, but it doesn’t mean you need
what you want.
Think carefully about what you specifically need and want, and ask why.
“I need this – I want this because____________________ (fill in the blank.)
Deciding what you don’t need and don’t want is also helpful. You have choices, and that is a positive and precious gift.
Make a list – What do I need?
Make another list – What do I want?
Then judge for yourself because you are the only person who knows what you actually need and want.
You do need some basic things to survive – air, water, food, some money, a place to live, security.
You may need and want a larger place to live because your family is growing.
You may want and need to take better care of yourself – to get more sleep, release stress, exercise, and change how you eat.
Maybe you need glasses to see clearer.
You may need medicine to live healthy.
You may need to be connected to the internet.
You may need and want a better job where you’re happier, more respected, creative, and expressed.
You may want and need to upgrade your computer skills.
You may need and want to spend more time with people you care about and love.
You may not need more money, clothes, success, the latest iPhone, to travel first class, go to an expensive, prestigious college even though you may want these things.
See the weaving that happens between need and want – want and need? It’s fascinating – tricky – fun how it goes back and forth – up and down – yes and no.
I’m encouraging you and myself to get to the essence of living your best life, and that means deciding what you need and want and not necessarily what society or the status quo says you need and should want and have.
