Nature – Natural – Naturalist

by Michael Feeley
A naturalist studies the natural world, the nature of the world, and observes the relationships between organisms, plants, animals, insects, and other living things and their environment.
Think about it. Aren’t we all naturalists?
Every day, we are connected to the natural world and all other living things physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Nature and self.
Self and world.
All that is you and all that is not you.
One and many.
Individual and all of humanity.
Separate and together.
American naturalist John Burroughs describes it like this:
“I go to nature to be soothed and healed and to have my senses put in order.”
I thank Jane Porges for introducing me to the German landscape painter Caspar David Friedrich, who describes his relationship to nature this way:
“I must stay alone and know that I am alone to contemplate and feel nature in full; I have to surrender myself to what encircles me, I have to merge with my clouds and rocks in order to be what I am.”
What are your observations and bond to nature?
