Meditation is Not an Escape
by Michael Feeley
I have been meditating for 35 years. Here’s what I’ve learned: meditation isn’t a place to escape. It’s a place to discover.
Many people come to meditation hoping to empty the mind, to drift away, to become vacant for a while and gain peace. I understand. Life is noisy, and silence feels like a relief. But that has never been my experience.
When I meditate, I go still. I drop down to my center. And what I find there surprises people when I describe it. My center isn’t empty. It’s alive. There’s activity there, most of it creative, all of it happening in the midst of deep peace and clarity.
Nearly every time I sit and meditate, on purpose, something arrives. An answer to a question I’ve been carrying. A new idea for a Daily. A sentence I didn’t know I needed. This morning, a piece about home came to me in meditation. Then another idea followed, and another.
Stillness and creativity on the inside is active change and learning. That’s the gift.
Please don’t think of meditation as an escape. Don’t aim to be vacant or feel it is a waste of time. Bring a question with you. Let it rest lightly. Then go quiet and listen. Relax into possibilities. Wait… be curious…
You may not get an answer right away. That’s fine. Keep showing up. The center has its own timing. Your center has you in its embrace.
The still place within you isn’t empty. It’s full of wisdom waiting to be heard. You just have to be quiet enough and aware and patient enough to receive it.
So try it tomorrow. Sit down, go still, and see what you might discover.
