Legendary
by Michael Feeley
WHEN COACHING EXECUTIVES, entrepreneurs, and creative leaders, we talk about legends – heroes we are grateful to and respect in business and life and why they are legendary.
– Why does this person or company stand out?
– Why do their attitudes, beliefs, core values, services, and products matter?
– What do you intend to leave behind as your legacy?
You do not have to be famous – acclaimed – renowned – to make a difference. A solopreneur or recent college graduate hopes to do work they’re proud of, to stand out, create a change, build a product, offer a service that helps others, and solve a problem.
Legends are people who try their best; even if they fail, they still try their best and keep trying.
Indeed, profit is critical. You need to make a living and meet the financial expectations of shareholders and investors.
– Where can you take a risk, trust yourself, leap beyond profits, and make a difference for humanity that can be legendary?
– The Matterhorn is legendary – The Pyramids – The Empire State Building (which is a business.)
– Maria Callas is a legend – Bob Dylan – Taylor Swift is making a legendary name for herself.
– Rosa Parks – Elizabeth Arden – Steve Jobs.
– Nike – The Ritz Carlton – Sotheby’s – Black Rock Financial.
– The Louvre Museum – MOMA – The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
Some more specific coaching talk:
– Do you want to be a legend like Kodak or Apple? (Kodak made a particular business choice and is no longer around. They missed the camera and photography opportunity.)
– Do you want to be Blockbuster or Netflix? (Why is Blockbuster out of business?)
– Do you want to be Sears Roebuck or Amazon? (Sears had great products and top service. What happened?)
One business legend I respect is Elsa Schiaparelli, a French haute couture designer and a genius. Unfortunately, she is no longer living but still making legendary headlines.
39-year-old American Daniel Roseberry is Schiaparelli’s Creative Director, stunning the world with his designs.
He is becoming a legend by honoring the legacy of Elsa Schiaparelli.
Check out the 9-minute YouTube video of his new 2024 design collection. Wild and gorgeous structure – creative and practical. He’s grounded and takes fearless risks that add to profits, including a ready-to-wear clothing line on the market.
You can lead and be legendary by doing heartfelt work that matters, work you’re proud of with consistent commitment that makes a difference inside and outside your company and life.
