Lead with Confidence Not Arrogance
by Michael Feeley
CONFIDENCE IS A winning attitude to have. It starts with a belief in your self.
It can seem like arrogance, especially if you act raffish and exaggerate your importance, as if you have all the answers, and pretending you’re better than other people.
True confidence is built on trust in yourself, other people, and things, welcoming the unknown, and even feeling uncertainty.
Confidence and uncertainty are a pair – hanging around each other all the time. It can be such a good blend as you try new things, ideas, plans, projects with self-assuredness that you will succeed even with doubt right beside you, and still you choose not to back away because you know if you fail, you’ll try again.
Confidence is a skill. It can be learned and practiced and should be cherished and protected.
Here are confidence-building words I treasure by the poet Rumi:
“You were born with potential.
You were born with goodness and trust.
You were born with ideals and dreams.
You were born with greatness.
You were born with wings.
You are not meant for crawling, so don’t.
You have wings.
Learn to use them and fly.”
