Job Creativity
by Michael Feeley
When looking for work, go beyond the job boards and the stamped-out socialization of finding a job.
Be clear about what kind of work you do and the type of job you want.
Remote assistant, IT expert, book coach and editor, meet and greet doorperson, accountant, receptionist. data entry specialist.
Why do you do what you do?
Why are you qualified?
Then, be informed and prepared: Research the companies you want to work for who need your skills and qualifications.
When you find three or five of them, check out their job listings and see if any open spots are right for you. If there are, apply.
If not, get creative. Look up the people in human resources, the hiring managers, and the heads of the departments you want to work for, get to know them through their bios and social media, and write to them. Tell them who you are, what you do, and why you want to work for them. Attach your resume and one relevant reference.
Then, ask for a meeting to discuss the possibility of working at the company and the division.
Track the information and follow up, being fresh each time you connect with a call, an email, or other innovative approaches to meeting as you build a business relationship and encourage people to build a job for you.
Don’t get stuck in the standard job search process. Be professional and bold, respectful, grounded, free, wild, imaginative, color outside the lines, and go to the edges so the people you are connecting with get really curious about you and pull you in to learn more.
