It Is What It Is

by Michael Feeley
We say it all the time. Taxes due? It is what it is. Your boss gives you the same raise again? It is what it is. No response to your emails? It is what it is.
But remember — you always have a choice.
You can accept the situation and express your complaints about it.
You can accept the situation and fight it.
Or, you can change how you think about it.
When you shift your mindset, you create a result you can live with. One that gives you peace of mind, rather than frustration and irritation.
“It is what it is” becomes dangerous when it’s used as an excuse to remain passive. When it’s code for “I don’t care enough to try.”
“That’s life… C’est la vie… Que sera sera… So what.”
But what if you do care?
What if instead of shrugging your shoulders, you asked:
How can I see this differently?
How can I respond in a way that serves me well and has me respect myself?
The situation might not change, but how you see it can completely transform.
Where do you stand? Do you use “it is what it is” as acceptance or as an excuse?
