Intermission
by Michael Feeley
Performances have an intermission for a reason. It’s a time to move around before returning to your seat for the remainder of an event.
We can take an intermission in our lives by choice or because something happens, such as changing or losing a job, being interrupted in studies, having challenges with relationships or finances, or any other reasons.
Intermission is a pause, a break, a short interval, a respite, and that lovely word interlude.
As a career coach, much of my work involves an intermission before a person’s next act, especially for people aged 50 – 60 – 70. It’s the opportunity to actively resee and refresh your present job – decide to move to a new company doing similar work – or build an entirely new career.
Intermissions are positive things. They create change, usually have gratitude in them, and you’re not alone. It’s about the lights coming up out of darkness, rest and motion, getting up and down, going out and back in, resetting and returning to something familiar, and also what is unknown, surprising, and new in the coming act.
It feels good to tell a person you’re taking an intermission, having an interlude in your life that includes activity about the work you do and want to do.
