I Need Your Help
by Michael Feeley
I need your help.
Kind and empowering words that call to the best in people.
The request for help meets our profound desire, hope, and need to have a good effect on others so that human beings can live well and be all they deserve.
Giving help and being generous are opportunities to try and find a solution to someone’s question or problem.
“Excuse me, can you please help me find #2 Fort Street?”
“I need some help. What’s a good place to eat around here?”
“Hi Dana, I’m looking for a new job. Can you help me find one?”
Asking for help is something to be proud of, but it can be challenging because we usually feel it shows weakness. We think we have to and should do things by and for ourselves.
That’s your inner critic talking down to you, looking to humiliate and hold you back from growing, learning, changing, and counting on other people. Your inner critic might say:
“Can’t do it by yourself? What a pathetic, lazy person you are. If you get help, then you owe something to someone else. You have to pay them back. You are so weak. Don’t ask for help.”
Where have you asked for help, earned a result, and felt grateful?
